This romantic musical drama Aashiqui 2 is a sequel to the 1990 blockbuster – Aashiqui. Directed by Mohit Suri there is no continuity or resemblance to the 1990 film.
Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor play the roles of Rahul and Arohi respectively. They have a common passion, it is their love for music. The film also explores the ups and downs of their romantic relationship, which grind through twists and turns, success and failure in their professional and personal lives.
Rahul Jaikar (Aditya) is a popular singer. He is talented, hardworking and successful. He is addicted to alcohol, and this addiction leads to his downfall.
It begins with a spiteful moment of drunken revelry at his concert in Goa, that Rahul leaves his show midway, and in a feeling of low self morale, drowns himself guzzling alcohol. It is late in the night, and he still desires for more alcohol, so he lands up at a local bar in Goa, where he spots Arohi (Shraddha Kapoor), who is singing his famous number with greater passion than him. Rahul is simply impressed.
He then invites Arohi to come to Mumbai and promises to build her career. He knows he is a failure now, maybe to balance the negativity in his inner self, he wants to have a purpose in life to go all out to see that Arohi gets the success she deserves.
Rahul finds himself falling in love with Araohi. He devotes all his efforts to see Arohi climb the ladder of success, at the same time he is beginning to realize the depths of his professional failure. Like the reality of what happens in Show Business, while a star is on the waning path, the same junta who loved and adored you, now behave and speak things in such a manner, like kicking your already shattered ego.
The climax is abrupt and it is unconventional.
Aditya Roy Kapur gives an intense performance. He has proved the point that he can carry a film on his shoulders. Shraddha Kapoor looks charming in certain scenes, specially the ones post her success. This movie would be appreciated for the portrayal of chemistry (love-hate relationship) between the leading actors and its music.
A very significant aspect of this film is that when the protagonist sees his career go downhill and witnesses the rising popularity of his lady love, there isn’t a tinge of jealousy in him.
It is nice here, he isn’t shown as the typical bewada (drunken character) usually depicted in Bollywood films. So it is to the credit to the writers ability of superb characterization. Rahul stares at his own failure, and it is this thought that leads him to go back guzzling alcohol, and not the envy of rising popularity, of the singer he is promoting.
Two songs from the movie have already topped the charts “Tum Hi Ho” and “Sun Raha Hai”. They do have recall value, but stand nowhere near the super hit songs of the 1990 Aashiqui.
An inconspicuous message of this film could be sermonized in simple words: Alcohol ruins your professional career. Please note.
